Andy Otto and Stewart Stewart Voegtlin thank those who’ve stepped forward and offered to volunteer for VBS. Unfortunately, even with those who offered their time, we would still be below the 8 to 1 child to adult ratio recommended in archdiocesan safe environment guidelines for youth (another guideline suggests a 3:1 ratio!). We take this seriously. Therefore, we are cancelling VBS for this summer. If you’ve paid we’ll be sure to refund you (give it a week or so and if you don’t get the refund, let Andy email@example.com or Stewart firstname.lastname@example.org know).
Know that this decision did not come easy for us because we know so many of you not only value VBS but also may have to make alternative plans for your children. Rey DelValle, who ran VBS last summer, recently ended his employment with STM which meant there were many loose ends to tie up in order to run the program well. VBS is a huge undertaking with many moving parts, requiring lots of person-power. It’s clear we couldn’t pull that together in time, and we’re sorry.
We plan to continue to offer VBS in coming years but operating out of a committee model who can work throughout the year in planning it, recruiting volunteers, and doing the work that is necessary for a great week of VBS. We also want it to be free. If you’re interested in being on this committee let us know. It takes a village to care well for so many kids.
Thanks for your understanding.
Have a blessed summer,
Andy and Stewart
