Help refugee children navigate the American school system and rise to their potential by dedicating just two and a half hours of your time each week! STM is partnering with Catholic Charities Atlanta (CCA) to tutor 30 second grade students in their afterschool program at Indian Creek Elementary school in Clarkston from 2:30 to 5:00pm each Wednesday starting in January 2020. A plan is to provide art enrichment in addition to helping with homework. We need 6 parish volunteers to be part of this team, led by a parishioner and social justice committee member John Schwenkler. No prior experience needed, just willingness to commit one day a week for a semester. Specific training and orientation, including Virtus safe environment training requirement will be provided. The team leader will also provide rides from church each week.
If you are interested or have any questions, please email John Schwenkler at firstname.lastname@example.org. An informational meeting with the CCA volunteer coordinator will take Wednesday, October 30 at 3pm in the parish library.
This is a wonderful way to form meaningful relationships with refugees and gain a broader cultural understanding of our local community by positively impacting students and their family’s progress towards self-sufficiency. Gain firsthand insight into the daily challenges of the resettlement process and be able to spread awareness about refugees to the larger Atlanta community.
