Fr. Mark Horak, SJ – Pastor
Fr. Mark was born and raised in Elyria, Ohio, and has lived as an adult up and down the east coast. He has studied at Georgetown University, Virginia Tech, Fordham University, Boston College, and the University of Maryland at Baltimore. He has worked as a city planner, immigration lawyer, and a parish priest. Fr. Mark has been a Jesuit since 1985.
Fr. Tim Stephens, S.J., Parochial Vicar
Fr. Tim is a native of Nashville, Tennessee. He entered the Jesuits in 1989 and was ordained a priest in 1999. His previous assignments have included: Parochial Vicar at St. Peter’s Church in Charlotte, North Carolina; Director of Loyola Retreat House in Faulkner, Maryland; teacher of economics and ethics and director of retreats at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC; and Treasurer of the (former) Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus.
Shaun Bland – STM School Principal
Joe Messina – Director of Worship
Joe Messina grew up in the Midwest, Kansas City Missouri and has lived in Atlanta since 1979. Joe has worked for the Archdiocese of Atlanta for 34 years and 16 of those years have been here at STM.
Andy Otto – Pastoral Assistant for Faith Formation
Andy Otto is originally from the Boston area where he earned a Master in Theology and Ministry from Boston College. Andy and his wife Sarah previously lived in Chico, CA where he taught high school theology. He has has two children and has lived in Atlanta since 2017. Andy is the author of God Moments: Unexpected Encounters in the Ordinary.
Sarah Otto – Adult Faith Formation and Pastor’s Liaison to the STM Social Justice Committee
Sarah Otto grew up in Phoenix, AZ and has lived in Atlanta since 2017. She has been a part of the Jesuit world since 2003, when she studied theology at Santa Clara University. After graduation, she did a year of service with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and then received her Master of Divinity at Boston College. Prior to moving to Atlanta, she worked in college campus ministry. She and her husband, Andy, have two children.
Carol Palmer – Business Manager
Carol Palmer grew up in Rochester, NY and has lived in Atlanta since 2010. She graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC with a BS Accounting degree. She is the proud mother of 2 children, has 3 beautiful granddaughters and a dog named Boomer. She has worked for several large corporations, the USO in Kuwait, and at STM since 2016.
Shelly Stafford – Communications
Shelly Stafford is originally from Palm Harbor, Fl. She has lived in the Atlanta area since 1982 and has been a parishioner at St. Thomas More for 18 years. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Journalism. She has 4 daughters who all attended STM Catholic School. Shelly has co-owned a website consulting business for the past 21 years with her husband.
Stewart Voegtlin – Youth Religious Education
Stewart Voegtlin was born and raised in Georgia, and lives in Avondale Estates with his wife, Katrina, son, Trey, and dog, Bowser. Stewart’s been at St. Thomas More for over two years, and works with children ages Pre-Kindergarten to 12th Grade.
Mitu Assefa – Administrative Assistant
Mitu Assefa was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She moved to Atlanta in 2003 and has been a parishioner at St. Thomas More since then. She also has a son who attends STM Catholic School.
Carl McColman – RCIA Coordinator
Carl McColman grew up in Hampton, Virginia, and has lived in the Atlanta area since 1993. He is the author of several books and a blog on the topics of spirituality and prayer. He and his wife Fran have co-directed the RCIA process at St. Thomas More since 2016.
Fran McColman – RCIA Coordinator
Fran McColman grew up in Forsyth, Georgia, and has lived in the Atlanta area since 1980. She is an artist who enjoys creating photography, hand-painted silk scarves, and ice-dyed t-shirts. She and her husband Carl have co-directed the RCIA process at St. Thomas More since 2016.

Brian McMichael was born and raised in the Atlanta area. He graduated from Kennesaw State University with a bachelor’s in Health and Physical Education, completed his master’s in Sport Science at the United States Sports Academy, and earned his doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Valdosta State University. Brian and his wife, Kelly, are the proud parents of Quinnlan, a student at STM. Dr. McMichael has worked with several athletic programs as a coach for various sports for over 20 years.
